Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1975, Jeffrey Brown grew up reading comic books with dreams of someday drawing them. Although he abandoned that idea to focus on becoming a "fine artist," while earning his studio MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Brown gradually abandoned painting and turned to drawing comics, creating his first autobiographical book, Clumsy, in 2001.
Displaying the intimacy of a diary with the immediacy of a sketchbook, Jeffrey's raw drawings and seemingly unfiltered thoughts and experiences caught the attention of comic book fans and cartoonists alike. More than just chronicles of bittersweet relationships, his musings on a wide range of subjects dart from superhero parodies to the grappling prowess of a "mixed martial artist" to the inner thoughts of emotional robots!
Since entering the comics field, Jeffrey has created a dozen books for a range of publishers, including Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, McSweeney's and Chronicle Books. Simon & Schuster has published two of his graphic memoirs, Little Things and Funny Misshapen Body. Jeffrey's work has also appeared in the Best American Comics series and received the Ignatz Award in 2003 for Outstanding Minicomic.
His art has been shown at galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art. He's also directed an animated video for the band Death Cab For Cutie, and has had his work featured on NPR's This American Life. Scott Eder Gallery is proud to be presenting Jeffrey's first solo show in New York.
